South Korean Army's 12th Division

Recently, a significant incident occurred within the South Korean Army's 12th Division, leading to the arrest of a company commander and a deputy company commander. They were accused of violating training regulations and subjecting trainees to excessive punishment, known as "extra drills," which resulted in the death of a trainee.

The incident took place on the afternoon of May 23, when a trainee collapsed during a training session. Despite being rushed to a civilian hospital, the trainee's condition worsened, and he passed away on May 25. Following this tragic event, an investigation revealed that the officers had ordered training that went against military regulations, including rigorous physical exercises that were not permitted under official guidelines.

These extra drills, or "punishment exercises," are intended to maintain discipline and improve physical fitness but must adhere to strict rules. However, it was found that the officers had mandated activities such as running with full gear and excessive push-ups, which are prohibited.

The arrest of the officers was expedited due to concerns about potential evidence tampering. The Chuncheon District Court issued the arrest warrants, emphasizing the severity of their alleged misconduct and the need for a thorough investigation.

This incident underscores the importance of adhering to established military training protocols and ensuring the safety and well-being of all service members. It also highlights the need for accountability within military ranks to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
